SMP Welcomes Liz Earnshaw – Hypnotherapist

Sports Medicine Partners are excited to welcome Liz Earnshaw to the Practice. Liz is a hypnotherapist with a background in General Practice Nursing. Liz will be using SMP as her base for her hypnotherapy clients and has explained to us a little about what she does below:

We have all experienced that daydreaming feeling; perhaps just before waking properly or sun bathing on the beach. It can be very pleasant and sometimes a solution to a problem can pop into your head. There are stories about Einstein formulating the Theory of Relativity whilst he was sunbathing and Newton thinking up his Law of Gravity whilst relaxing under an apple tree.

Hypnosis is that relaxed daydreaming state and it is a self imposed state. No-one can control you or make you do anything you don’t want to do.

Hypnotherapy is a way of guiding people to their own solutions whilst they are in this relaxed state. It uses metaphor, stories, disassociation and above all imagination. It’s not magic and it’s not a cure-all, but it can help us to focus on our inner thoughts and feelings and come up with a few answers.

Hypnotherapy can be used in many ways. It is particularly helpful in habit breaking, in phobias and stress related conditions. It is a NICE recommended treatment for IBS and there are hypnotherapists that specialise in everything from child birth to pain relief at the end of life. However, for people who have a moderate to severe psychiatric illness, hypnotherapy isn’t really appropriate and your GP and Mental Health Team should be your first port of call.
I have a Masters Degree in Advanced Nursing Practice as well as the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma. I’m particularly interested in the use of hypnotherapy for phobias and habit breaking but also in long term medical conditions and pain relief. Pre and post surgery hypnotherapy is an interest of mine and I have worked with quite a few clients now where this has been very successful.
