SMP’s Dr Kim Gregory’s Blog from the Invictus Games

Dr Kim Gregory, Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the Sports Medicine Partners, was at the Invictus Games.

Here she tells what it meant to her to be involved.

“Pulling on a bright green t-shirt with the words “I Am Medical” on the back to support over 400 competitors from 13 nations at the Invictus Games was a privilege. My four days involvement at the Invictus Games, a multisport event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, really brought home the power of sport to inspire recovery and rehabilitation.

“The medical team was there to support athletes in their preparation and recovery for their sports and treat any injuries sustained. With many athletes competing in multiple events their bodies were once again being pushed to the limit.

“However, these individuals are no stranger to battle and listening to their personal stories during treatment reinforced to us their “I can and will” attitude.

“To see photos of initial injuries then watch that individual throw themselves around a wheelchair basketball or rugby court is ‘mind blowing’ – words used by many of the athletes to describe the event.

”Inspirational athletes taking on New challenges achieving Victory due to an ‘I can and I will achieve attitude’. Comradeship, Teamwork demonstrated by those who are Unconquered following Self sacrifice for their country.

“It was Great fun increasing renewed Admiration for the Mental determination and Endeavour on show through Sportsmanship by people who are “the masters of their fate and captains of their souls”.

“Thank you for showing us that anything is possible if you have the will.”
