Cate’s Blog – Back Home :-(

Unfortunately, my time with Paralympics GB in Gran Canaria is over and I am now back home, trying to keep warm!

The last few days of camp were as busy as ever, with the addition of a new team member. A sports scientist joined us for 48 hours so that the athletes could test out innovations for their racing chairs. At the highest level of any sport, small improvements to equipment can mean the difference between a medal or not and a highly skilled team of engineers work tirelessly to perfect the athlete’s chairs so that any extra milliseconds can be shaved of their times. Work is still in progress but maybe by the time Rio 2016 comes around, some of the changes I saw at the edge of the track this week may be winning Team GB more medals!

Although my treatment sessions continued this week, for one athlete my approach had to change as she is competing in the London Marathon tomorrow. Sometimes, muscular treatment will leave a soreness that can last a couple of days (as many physio patients will have experienced) and for her, it was vitally important that this did not happen in order to ensure her best performance. As a result, my treatment pressure was much lighter than I would normally use, and was very much focussed on getting recovery as quickly as possible. Hopefully this will have put her in good stead to defend her title in the race tomorrow – good luck Shelly!

I have had the most amazing 2 weeks with the whole GB team. I have learnt a huge amount about disability sport, not only from a Physio perspective, but also from the technical point of view. However, the fundamental lesson is that although there have been obstacles to overcome for all of them, their disabilities do not disable them. I very much hope that they’ll have me back to work with them in the future and I thank Dr Rob Chakraverty for offering me the opportunity in the first place. So, Jenni, Hannah, Shelly, Mickey, Steve and Karen thank you for being so welcoming and I’ll see you all soon.
